April 2016 Constituency Newsletter

I would like to thank the constituents of Calgary-Bow who have come to my office, talked to me at events, and shared their issues with my team. Many of you have shared your concerns regarding the new West Ridge Junior High School and the modernization of Bowness High School. I took these concerns to the Minister of Education who assured me that the funding allocated for these projects will still be delivered. I also met with Joy Bowen-Eyre to discuss these projects and other issues facing our community.

In March I had the opportunity to attend the Valley Ridge Community Association’s Silent Auction. It was a wonderful opportunity to talk to the residents and hear their concerns. Many of you have shared your frustrations regarding the West Ring Road, and I realize that this project began in the 70’s. I would like to say that the West Ring Road will be built, it is a matter of when. I continue to push the Ministry of Transportation regarding this project and am meeting with Alberta Transportation about it as well.

This past spring session I had the opportunity to present my motion to the legislature:

"Motion 501: Be it resolved that the Legislative Assembly urge the Government to review current policies and strategies to increase community capacity to deliver transitional and low-barrier housing for vulnerable Albertans suffering with complex mental and physical health needs."

Access to safe, secure, appropriate and affordable shelter is a fundamental basic human right and every Albertan deserves a warm, safe place to call home. As Albertans endure this tough economic climate, it is critical to be reminded of the fact that getting people into stable, accessible and affordable homes reduces strain on other services.

Housing is a fundamental part of our society and I am so proud that I had the opportunity to meet with organizations such as Accessible Housing that focuses on highly vulnerable individuals with limited mobility and accessibility challenges. Their expertise in providing safe, affordable and permanent barrier- free housing and supports for individuals with mobility issues, while creating opportunities for them to thrive. They have started the Ramp-It-Up program with collaboration of volunteers and the leadership from small businesses, they can offer sing stepped storefronts with a custom ramp made at no cost to them. I am so excited to utilize this program in Calgary- Bow!

As spring comes into full force, many community association are holding Spring Clean-ups. My office looks forward to attending the Valley Ridge Annual Community Pathway Clean-Up on May 7, Bowness Community Association Spring Clean Up on May 8, Coach Hill Patterson Heights Spring Recycling Day on May 14 and Crestmont Community Associations Annual Spring Clean-up on June 26.

I am hosting several events across the constituency, which I hope you will be able to attend. On May 27, 5-7pm, we are hosting a Meet and Greet at the Crestmont Community Hall (12400 Crestmont Blvd. SW). This will be an opportunity for you to come and meet me and my staff, and discuss the issues that concern you. On June 4, 2-4pm I will be hosting a Town Hall at the Irish Cultural Centre (6452 35 Ave NW). I will discuss what I have been doing in the past year as your MLA, and answer questions. For more information please check my Facebook page.

My office serves the people of Calgary-Bow. My team is available to talk to constituents about provincial government departments, programs, congratulatory scrolls, and services. Please visit the office, and let us know how we can help you.

All the best!
