January 2017 Constituency Newsletter

Happy New Year Calgary Bow,

I would like to thank everyone that graciously invited me to attend their Holiday Open Houses, and events over the month of December. I am always grateful for the opportunity to connect with you at your events and in your celebrations. With that, I would like to invite you to my Annual New Year’s Open House on Friday, January 6, from 5 – 8:30pm. Appetizers and light refreshments will be provided, and this is a great opportunity for us to connect in person and in a more casual manner. This will be held at my constituency office, 6307 Bowness Road NW. I hope you can make it!

Over the course of 2016, I was able to connect with many of you to discuss the things that matter to you most. Whether it was about your neighbourhood, community, city or province; my team and I have been gathering information about what matters most to the residents of Calgary-Bow. So for January’s newsletter, I would like to highlight what we have identified as major concerns for our communities, the steps I have taken so far, and what will be next as we look to a new year for resolution.

Infrastructure:

In speaking with you at the door, and to your community associations it has become very clear that important infrastructure projects like the West Ring Road are a major priority for our communities. I am working with your community association to circulate a formal petition to urge our government to secure the earliest possible date to tender this project. I encourage you to participate by adding your name to help emphasize our shared goal. My staff and I have been working very hard to express the important benefits of this to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transportation, which has been very open to our feedback. I have requested a Town Hall meeting with the Honourable Minister Brian Mason and his staff in the next couple of months. Please keep an eye out for posters at local shops and my Facebook and Twitter feeds for the finalized details.

Gas Plus:

The Bowness community has been affected by an underground gas leak of approximately 7,000 liters of fuel which was discovered by a nearby resident in the summer of 2010. The legal proceedings are ongoing but since taking office my team and I have been working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Parks to assure a full soil remediation plan is in place and when given the opportunity to enter the property, action to clean up the area can be swift. It should be noted that remediation has been on going, and the Government of Alberta began hydrogen peroxide injections to the soil sites in October 2015. I have been assured that once legal proceedings conclude, I will be able to assist the Ministry of Environment and Parks in hosting a town hall for the community, and provide insight on the entire remediation process.

Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH):

Members of my staff are available to you if you require assistance maintaining or accessing any social service. We have consistently received feedback on the AISH program, and I would like to assure those members of our community that we have been diligent in sharing those concerns with the Ministry of Human Services. At my request, I have been designated by the government caucus to work with the Honourable Minister Irfan Sabir, and the Human Services portfolio, which I very much look forward to.

As always, my door is always open, please feel free to call or email my office at any time. I wish you all the best in this upcoming year, and look forward to working with you to move our province forward.
